Scottish Prison Population Statistics: FOI release

Information request and response under the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002.

Information requested

You asked for details of the determinate sentenced population in Scottish prisons broken down by age band, sentence length, offence group and financial year.

Response

Please find attached an excel spreadsheet of the data you have requested in your freedom of information request. As per your request, we have reduced the 5-year agebands to 10-year agebands to minimise the number of cells which much be suppressed for disclosure control. Any combinations of variables which are not present in the spreadsheet may be assumed to have 0 population for all years presented.

In your original request, you mentioned that you were interested in trends in prison sentencing lengths. Our professional advice is that the data you have requested would not be sufficient to address this interest as prison population data is not suitable on it's own to indicate sentencing trends. The prison statistics team are very happy to discuss your aims and provide advice in this area, please let us know if this would be of interest to you.
