Please confirm current costs to date of Kirkwood St & Cornwall St M8 footbridge replacement.

Please confirm the anticipated reopening date.

The continued closure of these footbridges is now having a severe effect on access to employment and the ability of people living and working in the area to move about without access to private cars. I am aware that this section of trunk road is managed by Amey.

Response

The total cost for the Kirkwood St & Cornwall St M8 footbridge refurbishments is currently £3,827,968.91. This cost is made up of operational items, the estimate to complete the refurbishment, including investigation surveys, testing, vesting of materials and all works completed to date.

The anticipated reopening date is currently the end of September 2026. However, there is potential for variation to this as programme reviews are ongoing as part of remobilisation and adjustments for updated strengthening designs.

We appreciate and acknowledge the impact the footbridge works are having on the community. The duration of these works has been longer than initially anticipated due to the discovery of additional structural issues in previously inaccessible locations once the bridge spans were removed, which necessitated more in-depth inspection and testing. These further investigations were essential to develop a robust, long-term solution that ensures the safety of all users.
