Transport Scotland - A77 camera query: FOI release

Can you confirm if the cameras on the A77 are the same as the cameras under investigation as being done with National Highways.

The safety cameras on the A77 are not the same as those investigated by National Highways.

The cameras operating on the A77 are average speed cameras installed by Jenoptik UK Ltd. They operate by calculating the time taken to driven between each camera and calculate the average speed of each vehicle. They are calibrated annually and enforce at a fixed speed.

National Highways reported an issue impacting the HADECS variable speed enforcement systems in England. The system operating in England was upgraded recently and it is understood the issue related to a software issue following that upgrade. Scotland operates one HADECS system on the M90 corridor which is capable of enforcing variable speed limits. It operates using different software and the Scottish system is wholly unconnected to the system in operation in England.

We engaged with National Highways and our supplier Swarco UK Ltd when this issue was reported, to discuss the nature of the fault on the English systems. We can confirm the Scottish system remains unaffected and has not been impacted by the issue reported in England.
