Response
For the purpose of this request we define therapy as counselling and have provided a response on this.
The Scottish Government is committed to supporting the health and wellbeing of its workforce. Our wellbeing approach recognises that good mental health is essential for staff to perform effectively and sustainably. To support this, we provide access to professional counselling services. This ensures staff have confidential, specialist support where required.
The Scottish Government has a contract with the Keil Centre, part of which is to provide counselling support to staff in the Senior Civil Service and exceptionally to those in other grades. The spend for each calendar year on counselling is set out below:
2020 £ 25,400.00
2021 £ 17,250.00
2022 £ 11,375.00
2023 £ 13,625.00
2024 £ 13,750.00
2025 £ 21,782.50
The higher spend in 2020-21 coincided with the pandemic. Costs per session rose when a new contract was let through a competitive procurement process in 2025, which has led to an increase in overall spend.
