Data Protection breach compensation statistics: FOI release

Information request and response under the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002

Information requested

I would like information on data related breach payments made in the last 5 years.

I would like to you if any payments have been made, how many and what were the payments.

I would also like to know what the breaches were, obviously without any personal details of those involved.

Response

Two instances of personal data breaches which have resulted in payments made in the last 5 years:

1. One instance of a lost package – information sent by tracked Royal Mail to a previous registered address. The package was not signed for, nor returned to the Scottish Government - £500.

2. One instance of information sent to an incorrect recipient - £15,139.20.
