Full Time Equivalent (FTE) teacher statistics: FOI release

Information request and response under the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002.

Information requested

  • In the last 5 years, has there been any cases of teachers being displaced by newly qualified trainee teachers , who are guaranteed a one year appointment?
  • The Scottish Government does not hold this information. Are you saying the information is either not recorded, not disseminated or not specific enough to one locality. If so please advise which.

Response

  • At the time of 2024 Teacher Census, 9,311 full time equivalent (FTE) teachers were in temporary posts (18% of all FTE teachers). Of these 9,311 teachers, 2,290 were probationer teachers on the teacher induction scheme. Further details are available in the school summary statistics here Summary Statistics For Schools In Scotland 2024 - gov.scot (Summary statistics for schools in Scotland 2024 - gov.scot).
  • The employment of teachers is a matter for local authorities. The Scottish Government does not collect information on whether newly qualified teachers displace existing teachers.
