Modelling work for class contact time reduction in Scottish schools: FOI release

Information requested

I would like to receive any work undertaken by Education Scotland to understand how the Scottish Government’s pledge to reduce class contact time by 90 minutes a week could be realised in Scottish schools.

Specifically, I understand modelling work has been undertaken by Andrew Creamer through the timetabling group at Education Scotland. I would like to receive any information held by Education Scotland setting out the details of any models produced by this group, as well as any minutes of meetings of this group held in 2025 (this should include meetings where the implementation of the class contact time reduction was discussed as well as minutes of any other meetings of the group held in 2025).

While our aim is to provide information whenever possible, in this instance we are unable to provide some of the information you have requested because exemptions apply under section 29(1)(a) – formulation or development of government policy and section 38(1)(b) – personal information of FOISA applies to that information. The reasons why these exemptions are applied are explained in Annex A attached.

Please note the National Timetabling Group have currently met once in 2025. There are no minutes available as the meeting was held in a workshop style and members had the opportunity to discuss ideas which will be used to support the development of options for Ministers.
