Motorcycle traffic statistics by local authority: FOI release

Information request and response under the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002.

Information requested

You asked for 'I would like to ask for passenger kilometres on two-wheeled vehicles (motorcycles) in 2016/2017 in the following local authorities: East Ayrshire, East Dunbartonshire , East Renfrewshire, Glasgow City, Inverclyde, North Ayrshire, North Lanarkshire, Renfrewshire, South Ayrshire, South Lanarkshire, and West Dunbartonshire.'

Response

The road traffic estimate that we hold relate to vehicle kilometres travelled, and not passenger kilometres travelled. The table below provides motorcycle traffic on that basis for the areas that you requested.

It is important to note that these motorcycle traffic estimates split by Local Authorities are not typically published. The sample size and methodology for road traffic estimates are designed to produce robust estimates at the regional and national level only.

Motorcycle traffic estimates for Local Authorities are calculated as part of the process for producing the published estimates. However, estimates for motorcycles are not published at Local Authority level, as they are based on small sample sizes and they are not always based on up-to-date counts made at these locations.

We would strongly advise caution when using data at this level of disaggregation in any analyses and make a note of the limitations in any published materials.

Further information about these traffic estimates is available at: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/road traffic-statistics-information
