Scottish Government policy guidance on Artificial Intelligence use: FOI release

Information requested

Copies of any records of interactions with ChatGPT or other AI chatbot/LLM systems conducted by Scottish Government Ministers, including but not limited to:

1. Chat logs, transcripts, or records of any interactions between Scottish Ministers and ChatGPT (or similar AI chatbots) that were conducted on government devices, accounts, or within official government work.

2. Metadata or documentation relating to ministerial use of ChatGPT, such as internal policies, email discussions, or briefings on its use by Ministers.

3. Dates and times of recorded interactions, if available.

4. Name and Position, of involved person.

If any part of this request is refused, please specify the exemption(s) being applied and provide a justification as required under FOISA. If the information is available in a specific format, I would prefer it in electronic format (PDF or Word document).

If any of this information is publicly available, please direct me to the appropriate resource.

If It is not possible to provide the information requested due to the information exceeding the cost of compliance limits outlined in section 12, please provide advice and assistance under Section 16 of the act as to how I can refine my request.

If at any point in retrieving this information the time limit exceeds that which is given to Freedom of Information requests, please stop and email me with the information retrieved so far.

Response

Whilst our aim is to provide information whenever possible, in this instance the Scottish Government does not hold all of the information you have requested. A response to each of the questions asked is below.

1. In this instance the Scottish Government does not hold the information you have requested. We do not currently log what queries were submitted to AI websites or the answers returned.

2. A document which outlines the policy guidance on AI use in the Scottish Government has been attached to this FOI. We do not currently log the requested metadata.

3. In this instance the Scottish Government does not hold the information you have requested. Whilst we do log access attempts made to named URL's, and therefore websites categorised as AI, we do not currently log what queries were submitted to AI websites or the answers returned.

4. Given the lack of data available for the previous points, there is no data available for this question.

Therefore, this is a formal notice under section 17(1) of FOISA that the Scottish Government does not have all of the information you have requested.
