Retired Police Officers pension scheme enrolment and Police Remediable Service Statements (RSS): FOI release

Information request and response under the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002.

Information requested

1. The number of retired police officers enrolled in a pension scheme(s) which the SPPA administers who have reached retirement age and have yet to receive their any pension as a result of the 2015 Remedy.

2. The number of retired police officers enrolled in a pension scheme(s) which the SPPA administers who have retired, are receiving some of there pensions benefits from a pension scheme the SPPA administers but still have a portion on pension benefits which have not been paid to them as a result of the 2015 Remedy. The SPPA which administers Police Scotland Pension schemes (the legacy scheme and the CARE scheme) has not (and has stated in the case of police pension scheme is not going to be issuing RSS' until May 2025) issued any RSS to any retired officers meaning that there may be a cohort of retired officers who upon retiring were able to access some but not all of their pension benefits.
I would like to know how many retired officers have not been able to access all of their retirement benefits as a result of the SPPA not issuing RSS.

3. The number of Remediable Service Statements which have been requested and not fulfilled in respect of Police Scotland pension scheme(s).

Response

1. The number of retired police officers enrolled in a pension scheme(s) which the SPPA administers who have reached retirement age and have yet to receive their any pension as a result of the 2015 Remedy is 829 as of 28th February 2025.

2. Any officer who is retired and in scope of remedy will either be protected and receiving legacy pension or tapered and receiving part legacy and part CARE or unprotected and receiving CARE pension for the remedy period.

3. Remediable Service Statements are not issued on request, therefore we are unable to provide a number. These will be issued in accordance with the dates published on our member website here: Police Remedy Hub | SPPA
