Accessible Vehicle and Equipment (AVE) application data: FOI release

Information request and response under the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002.

Information requested

Request for information 1: Please tell me how many successful AVE applications have been approved by Social Security Scotland in the financial years 2021, 2022, 2023 and so far this year. If you are able, may you break down how many of these applications were made via ADP or CDP.

Request for information 2: For the same financial years, please provide me with the type of vehicles that successful AVE applications have funded. (Including make and model). If possible, please also tell me if they are petrol, diesel or electric. For example, Ford Fiesta, petrol.

Request for information 3: For each of those vehicles, please tell me how much is paid towards these vehicles in lease costs, insurance, breakdown cover, vehicle tax and servicing and maintenance per month. For example, Ford Fiesta, petrol, £120 per month for the lease, £30 for insurance, etc.

Request for information 4: If it is easier, please provide a lump sum for each of these categories (lease costs, insurance, breakdown cover, vehicle tax and servicing and maintenance) per financial year in response to question 3 (the more detail the better).

Response

Requests for information 1, 2, 3 and 4:

While our aim is to provide information whenever possible, in this instance Social Security Scotland does not have the information you have requested.

This is a formal notice under section 17(1) of FOISA that Social Security Scotland does not have the information you have requested.

For clarity, clients who are awarded the enhanced rate of the Mobility component of Adult Disability Payment or Child Disability Payment are able to use either the whole or part of the money they get for the Mobility component to access the Accessible Vehicles and Equipment scheme. The Accessible Vehicles and Equipment Scheme helps disabled people to lease a range of vehicles including cars, scooters, powered wheelchairs and specially adapted vehicles. To apply to lease a vehicle using the scheme, clients apply with our authorised provider, Motability Operations Ltd.

Further information is available on the Motability website.

We can provide the following information which may be helpful to you. We publish figures for the number in receipt of mobility award who receive Accessible Vehicles and Equipment payment in our published statistics for Adult Disability Payment and Child Disability Payment.

It is important to note that it is not possible to report the total number of clients that have had a successful application for AVE. These statistics show the number in receipt of a mobility award who receive Accessible Vehicles and Equipment payment at a specific point in time, which can fluctuate, and not the number of approved applications per month.
