A720 City Bypass accidents and breakdowns: FOI release

Information request and response under the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002

Information requested

In the past five years, how many accidents and breakdowns have been recorded on the entirety of the Edinburgh City Bypass (A720).

Could this be broken down by i) year and ii) accident and iii) breakdown. If you only have the information for accidents, that is fine and I'm happy to withdraw the breakdowns element.

Response

With regards traffic collisions, the records we hold relate to collisions where someone is injured or killed, and which become known to Police Scotland. Therefore we do not hold information on non-injury collisions.

The following table shows the number of injury collisions on the A720. Please note that the figures for 2023 are provisional as they are based on monthly returns received thus far from Police Scotland in 2023, with the most recent returns being received on 11th April 2024. This may be an incomplete picture of casualties up to that date due to a slight lag between records processed by Police Scotland and data availability. These figures are also subject to change due to subsequent corrections and late records.

As far as breakdowns on the A720 Edinburgh City Bypass are concerned, Transport Scotland only holds this information for the stretches of road that are classified as trunk road. This covers the majority of the road, but excludes the stretch between Hermiston and Gogar. Edinburgh city council may be able to provide the requested information for that stretch of road.

The following table shows the number of broken down or abandoned vehicle incidents recorded on the trunk road sections of the road between 2020 and 2024.
