Number of psychiatric, addiction, or learning disability beds by local authority: FOI release

Information request and response under the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002

Information requested

I'm writing a local study on alcohol recovery in Scotland, and I've come across your webpage detailing the number of psychiatric, addiction, or learning disability beds by local authority.  (https://www.gov.scot/publications/inpatient-census-2022-part-1-mental-health-learning-disabilityinpatient- bed-census-part-2-out-scotland-nhs-placements/pages/3/).  I was wondering if there is any more specific data available, both of just addiction/ alcoholism and a more specific geographical location than local authority.

Response

I enclose a copy of some of the information you requested. We do not hold details of whether specific inpatient beds in addiction wards in NHS Scotland are dedicated to treating those with alcohol or other substance addictions. However, we can provide you with greater detail on the number and location of addiction beds within NHS Scotland (Table 1 below).  Please note that this data includes a revision to the published data from the 2022 Mental Health Inpatient Census, as it was discovered that a small number of health boards had omitted some data (see Mental Health Inpatient Census - gov.scot (www.gov.scot) for further details).
