Information requested

Professor Brown co-chaired the NHS Scotland Corporate Governance Steering Group that produced, in December 2022,the second edition of the blueprint for good governance and wrote the Foreword to that document.

  • How much, in addition to his remuneration as chair of a regional health board, did he receive for his work on that governance document.

In 2023, Professor Brown, along with Susan Walsh, carried out a detailed corporate governance review into NHS Forth Valley.  The Report ran to 66 pages and contained 51 recommendations

  • How much, in addition to his remuneration as chair of a regional health board, did Professor Brown receive for his work on the governance review and production of the Report.

Response

In relation to your request, we can advise that John Brown was compensated at the appropriate level as per the public pay sector policy for his Chair role at NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde.  This is set out here DL(2023)02

In 2019, Professor Brown’s time commitment increased from 3 to 5 days per week to accommodate the significant additional work involved in 2 key pieces of work.

For the additional work he was commissioned to undertake, Professor Brown was paid an additional amount in reflection of the scope and importance of this work to the NHS in Scotland.  This meant, in addition to his set rate, Professor Brown was paid an additional:

  • 30% for the Blueprint for Good Governance and advising boards on governance issues; and
  • 10% for the Global Citizenship programme.

Professor Brown undertook the review of Governance at NHS Forth Valley within the remit of his work on the Blueprint for Good Governance and no additional remuneration was given other than that stated above.
