Correspondence with Chief Statistician and First Minister on renewable electricity: FOI release

Information request and response under the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002

Information requested

Correspondence (including any briefing documents) between the Scottish Government’s Chief Statistician and the First Minister’s Office relating to statements made by Scottish Government Ministers on renewable electricity mentioned in Sir Robert Chote’s letter to Stephen Kerr MSP on 2 November 2022.

Response

I attach a copy of the information you requested.

Although the Chief Statistician is ultimately responsible for Scottish Government statistics, support for Ministers is typically delegated to statisticians with expert knowledge of the topic area.

While there has been no correspondence between the Chief Statistician and the First Minister relating to this matter, we have provided a briefing document shared with the First Minister by Scottish Government statisticians on 4 October 2022 relating to this issue. This briefing is provided in the attached Annex to this response.

The Chief Statistician is happy with the approach being taken and continues liaise with the UK Statistics Authority on broad matters relating Scottish Official Statistics.
