The number of Social Homes demolished by Registered Social Landlords (RSLs) and Councils since 2007: FOI release

Information request and response under the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002.

Information requested

For the figures for the number of Social Homes that have been demolished by RSL's and Councils who have housing services if so can you provide the figures by year format since 2007 by email.

Response

Our most up to date Demolitions data from our most recent Annual publication (May 2022) can be found here Housing statistics: Conversions and demolitions - gov.scot (www.gov.scot). The data is presented by financial year from 1990-91 to 2020-21. It is split in three ways, all tenures, local authority and nonlocal authority demolitions (RSL and Private sector). The local authority demolition figures are accurate and generally comprise of the majority of activity, but authorities differ in their ability to provide information on other tenure demolitions. For some councils this includes RSL demolitions only and privately owned data is not available. Others rely on building warrants for demolition which may underestimate the true figure. We advise that these data should be considered as a minimum level of demolition activity in Scotland and are not comprehensive.

We do not keep any other information on demolitions exclusive to social homes, as you asked for but this data could be used as a general guide to demolitions in Scotland. We are currently looking into other sources which may be able to provide more accurate and complete information on private and RSL demolitions.
