Statistics for hip and knee replacements: FOI release

Information request and response under the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002.


Information requested

The most recent twelve month (or shorter) period for which figures are available after September 2020:

  1. A breakdown of the total activity at private hospitals in Scotland, on behalf of the NHS, for hip and knee replacement operations.
  2. A breakdown for each private hospital involved.
  3. A breakdown for each health board involved.
  4. (a) the total cost of these procedures, broken down by each private health company and (b) the average cost of each of these procedures (hip and knee separately), broken down by each private health company.

Responses to your questions are set out below:

Q1.
Between January 2021 and June 2021, 90 Hip and Knee procedures were performed at private hospitals on behalf of the NHS. No hip or knee replacements have been done after June 2021 in private hospitals on behalf of the NHS.

An exemption under section 17(1) of the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002 (FOISA) – ‘Information Not Held’ is being applied. While our aim is to provide information whenever possible, in this instance the Scottish Government does not have the information you have requested. The Scottish Government does not have costs broken down by operation type.
