E-scooter accident statistics: FOI release

Information request and response under the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002.

Information requested

Would it be possible to get an annual breakdown of all the accidents involving escooters than have taken place in each of the years 2016-2021, as well as a monthly breakdown for 2022 so far please?

Can you specify how many of these accidents involved children please?

Response

We only collect information about road accidents that involve injury and happen on public roads. Escooters are a relatively new form of transport, therefore the number of accidents involving this type of vehicle have been very low in recent years.

Prior to 2019 there were no accidents involving an e-scooter. There was one accident in 2019 (which did not involve a child) and 3 accidents in 2020 (one of which involved a child).

Accident data for 2021 and 2022 are still being collected from the police and verified. Provisional data for 2021 should be available towards the end of May 2022.
