Breakdown of Scotrail service cancellations by cause: FOI release

Information request and response under the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002

Information requested

The total number of scotrail services cancelled in 2021, 2020 and 2019, broken down by cause of cancellation.

Response

I can confirm that the number of ScotRail services cancelled by year for each of the three years 2019, 2020 and 2021 is available on-line at this link:

Table 3124 - Trains planned and cancellations by operator and cause (periodic) | ORR Data Portal

From this webpage, a spreadsheet can be downloaded which has the information you require. Note also:

  • These data are reported for each period by the railway industry financial year, which runs from April to March.
  • They are reported for Great Britain as a whole, and then by individual operator.
  • The start of Period 11 in one year through to the end of Period 10 in the next year, covers the period of the calendar year, if that is how you need the data advised.
  • In terms of cause, the data are broken down by responsible party, whether the operator or the network, and then whether the cause of the cancellation is internal or external to the specific party. For example, if the cause of the cancellation is weather, then that is counted as being a network responsibility, but external to the network. Likewise, if for example the cause of the cancellation is a train breakdown, then that is treated as an operator responsibility, but internal rather than external.
