Figures given to the First Minister Nicola Sturgeon and Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care on the number of people in Scotland in hospital with COVID 19 from these dates:

27/12/2021, 28/12/21, 29/12/21, 30/12/2021, 31/01/2021, 01/01/2022, 02/01/2022, 03/01/2022, 04/01/2022, 05/01/2022.

Please note that over the festive period, NHS Boards were not required to submit their daily hospital occupancy data on 25-26 December 2021 and 1-2 January 2022. Boards submitted "catch-up" data covering the days they were stood down allowing the daily time series to be maintained and data to be published on the next working day. Daily hospital occupancy figures for Scotland are recorded in our "Trends in COVID-19 data" workbook published here.

27 December 2021

  • NHS boards reported 37 recently confirmed patients in ICU (for 28 days or less) yesterday, an increase of 1 from before Christmas*. This compares with around 160 patients in ICU at the peak in January 2021, and around 220 at the previous peak in April 2020.
  • In addition, NHS boards reported 16 long stay COVID-19 patients in ICU (for more than 28 days) yesterday, an increase of 3 from before Christmas.
  • NHS boards reported 553 patients in hospital yesterday with recently confirmed COVID-19 (including 37 in ICU for 28 days or less) – an increase of 29 from before Christmas*. This compares with 2,053 patients in hospital at the peak in January 2021, and 1,520 at the previous peak in April 2020.

* NHS Lothian figures from before Christmas were revised following a late submission. This means that comparisons with before Christmas will not match published figures. Published figures will be revised when next updated on Wednesday 29 December
** NHS Dumfries & Galloway have been unable to provide a return so their figures have been rolled forward from 24 December.

28 December 2021

  • NHS boards reported 37 recently confirmed patients in ICU (for 28 days or less) yesterday, the same as the day before. This compares with around 160 patients in ICU at the peak in January 2021, and around 220 at the previous peak in April 2020.
  • In addition, NHS boards reported 16 long stay COVID-19 patients in ICU (for more than 28 days) yesterday, the same as the day before.
  • NHS boards reported 594 patients in hospital yesterday with recently confirmed COVID-19 (including 37 in ICU for 28 days or less) – an increase of 41 from the day before. This compares with 2,053 patients in hospital at the peak in January 2021, and 1,520 at the previous peak in April 2020.

** NHS Dumfries & Galloway have been unable to provide a return so their figures have been rolled forward from 24 December.

29 December 2021

  • NHS boards reported 36 recently confirmed patients in ICU (for 28 days or less) yesterday, a decrease of 1 from the day before. This compares with around 160 patients in ICU at the peak in January 2021, and around 220 at the previous peak in April 2020.
  • In addition, NHS boards reported 15 long stay COVID-19 patients in ICU (for more than 28 days) yesterday, a decrease of 1 from the day before.
  • NHS boards reported 679 patients in hospital yesterday with recently confirmed COVID-19 (including 36 in ICU for 28 days or less) – an increase of 80 from the day before. This compares with 2,053 patients in hospital at the peak in January 2021, and 1,520 at the previous peak in April 2020.

* NHS Dumfries & Galloway figures submitted data for 25-28 December this morning, which has revised totals for previous days.

30 December 2021

  • NHS boards reported 34 recently confirmed patients in ICU (for 28 days or less) yesterday, a decrease of 2 from the day before. This compares with around 160 patients in ICU at the peak in January 2021, and around 220 at the previous peak in April 2020.
  • In addition, NHS boards reported 15 long stay COVID-19 patients in ICU (for more than 28 days) yesterday, the same as the day before.
  • Overall, COVID-19 patients (including recently confirmed and long stay) account for 22% of total patients in ICU.
  • NHS boards reported 810 patients in hospital yesterday with recently confirmed COVID-19 (including 34 in ICU for 28 days or less) – an increase of 131 from the day before. This compares with 2,053 patients in hospital at the peak in January 2021, and 1,520 at the previous peak in April 2020.

31 December 2021

  • NHS boards reported 36 recently confirmed patients in ICU (for 28 days or less) yesterday, an increase of 2 from the day before. This compares with around 160 patients in ICU at the peak in January 2021, and around 220 at the previous peak in April 2020.
  • In addition, NHS boards reported 15 long stay COVID-19 patients in ICU (for more than 28 days) yesterday, the same as the day before.
  • Overall, COVID-19 patients (including recently confirmed and long stay) account for 23% of total patients in ICU.
  • NHS boards reported 859 patients in hospital yesterday with recently confirmed COVID-19 (including 36 in ICU for 28 days or less) – an increase of 49 from the day before. This compares with 2,053 patients in hospital at the peak in January 2021, and 1,520 at the previous peak in April 2020.

  • NHS boards reported 38 recently confirmed patients in ICU (for 28 days or less) yesterday, an increase of 2 from before new year*. This compares with around 160 patients in ICU at the peak in January 2021, and around 220 at the previous peak in April 2020.
  • In addition, NHS boards reported 14 long stay COVID-19 patients in ICU (for more than 28 days) yesterday, a decrease of 1 from before new year*.
  • NHS boards reported 1,031 patients in hospital yesterday with recently confirmed COVID-19 (including 38 in ICU for 28 days or less) – an increase of 172 from before new year*. This compares with 2,053 patients in hospital at the peak in January 2021, and 1,520 at the previous peak in April 2020.

* NHS Dumfries & Galloway have been unable to provide returns for 1-3 January, so their data for 31 December has been rolled forward for these dates.
** NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde have provided their return today, but catch-up data for 1-2 January has not yet been submitted. Data for 31 December has been rolled forward for 1-2 January.

4 January 2022

  • NHS boards reported 42 recently confirmed patients in ICU (for 28 days or less) yesterday, an increase of 4 from the day before*. This compares with around 160 patients in ICU at the peak in January 2021, and around 220 at the previous peak in April 2020.
  • In addition, NHS boards reported 11 long stay COVID-19 patients in ICU (for more than 28 days) yesterday, a decrease of 3 from the day before*.
  • NHS boards reported 1,147 patients in hospital yesterday with recently confirmed COVID-19 (including 42 in ICU for 28 days or less) – an increase of 116 from the day before*. This compares with 2,053 patients in hospital at the peak in January 2021, and 1,520 at the previous peak in April 2020.

* NHS Dumfries & Galloway have been unable to provide returns for 1-4 January, so their data for 31 December has been rolled forward for these dates.
** NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde have provided their return today and yesterday, but catch-up data for 1-2 January has not yet been submitted (this is expected tomorrow). Data for 31 December has been rolled forward for 1-2 January.

  • In addition, NHS boards reported 11 long stay COVID-19 patients in ICU (for more than 28 days) yesterday, the same as the day before.
  • NHS boards reported 1,223 patients in hospital yesterday with recently confirmed COVID-19 (including 42 in ICU for 28 days or less) – an increase of 71 from the day before. This compares with 2,053 patients in hospital at the peak in January 2021, and 1,520 at the previous peak in April 2020.
