Information request and response under the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002
Information requested
The rates of re-offending by young men who have been released from Polmont.
Response
I attach a copy of some of the information you requested.
This shows one year reconviction rates for men sentenced to Young Offender Institutions in Scotland for the 2012-13 to 2017-18 cohorts. Note that as the reconviction data are based on sentencing data, and we don't have information on the specific institution that people were sent to, we can only provide reconviction rates for people sentenced to Young Offender Institutions. Someone on a long sentence may be counted here as sentenced to a Young Offenders Institution, but may have finished it in a prison.
For reconviction rates for males under 21 by numbers of previous convictions; along with comparisons to females, other disposals, and other age groups, please see table 11 in the Reconviction Rates: 2017-18 cohort publication at the following link https://www.gov.scot/publications/reconvictionatesscotland- 2017-18-offender-cohort/pages/21/
The raw data underlying these are found "Age Disposal Previous" tab of the Additional LA Reconvictions tables Excel file, that can be downloaded from the supporting tables tab at the link.
While our aim is to provide information whenever possible, in this instance the Scottish Government does not have some of the information you have requested. The reasons why we don't have the information are explained below.
The most recent cohort we hold data for is the 2017-18 cohort, as there is a follow up period needed to count the reconvictions and collect the data. Therefore we've provided the 2017-18 cohort and the preceding five years. The 2018-19 cohort statistics will be published in the autumn of 2021.
