Information requested

1. How many civil servants and special advisors worked directly in the following Scottish Government directorates in each of the past five financial years to date. For 2020-21 please give the most recent figure at time of response. Please breakdown the figures by number of civil servants and number of special advisors

a. Budget and Public Spending Directorate
b. Chief Economist Directorate
c. Economic Development Directorate
d. Fair Work, Employability and Skills Directorate
e. Financial Management Directorate
f. Financial Strategy Directorate
g. Scottish National Investment Bank Directorate
h. Taxation and Fiscal Sustainability Directorate

2. If the Scottish Government has a measure of the level of work capacity in each directorate could you please detail what capacity each directorate is currently recorded as being at.

Response

1) The information you have requested is provided in the attached excel document. Please note the following when referring to this data:

The structure of the Civil Service changes over time. Information for the requested directorates has been provided for as long as they have existed under the names you have specified.

Both FTE (full time equivalent) and headcount are provided. FTE stands for full time equivalent where full time is 37 hours a week. A member of staff working a 18.5 hour week would be counted as 0.5 FTE.

Please note there are no special advisors employed in any of the requested directorates. Special advisors are located within the ministerial private office.

2) While our aim is to provide information whenever possible, in this instance the Scottish Government does not have all of the information you have requested. We do not currently measure work capacity in the way which you have requested.
