Laptops issued to children and young people due to school closures: FOI release

Information request and response under the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002

Information requested

1. Further to Parliamentary Question S5W-30015 in the name of Alexander Stewart MSP, and the subsequent answer given by John Swinney MSP on July 1 2020, how many of the 25,000 laptops have been issued to children and young people?
2. Can this be broken down by (i) The number given to each Local Authority and (ii) The date in which they were issued to the local authority

Response

1. Local authorities are making local arrangements for management of devices and for allocation of devices to individual pupils, in line with their plans for school reopening. As schools only reopened from 11 August, we do not as yet have detailed information from every local authority regarding the number of devices that are now in the hands of pupils.
2. Eighteen local authorities chose to take up the offer of Chromebook devices purchased by Scottish Government. By 14 August 2020, approximately 20,000 Chromebooks have been shipped by the supplier to local authorities. The remainder will have been shipped by 21 August. The breakdown of devices per local authority is shown in the table below:
