Rates and total spending on Bus Service Operators Grant (BSOG): FOI release

Information request and response under the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002.

Information requested

I’m conducting some research into BSOG rates and total BSOG Government spending. I’m trying to find the figure for 2010 through to 2018 (year by year ideally). If you have or know where I can find these figures, I would appreciate very much appreciate the help.

Response

I can confirm that for financial years 2010/11 and 2011/12, the BSOG payment rate was 41.21p with the calculation methodology linked to the fuel consumption. From 1st April 2012, the calculation methodology changed with the removal of the link to fuel consumption and payment per kilometre was introduced. From financial year 2012/13 till present, the BSOG payment rate is 14.4p per kilometre.

BSOG also contains an incentive for low carbon vehicles. The BSOG LCV incentive was introduced in the financial year 2011/12 at 14.4p per kilometre for qualifying vehicles. The BSOG LCV rate was amended to 10.1p per kilometre in April 2017.

The BSOG payments made by Transport Scotland between 2010 and 2018, to all eligible Scottish bus operators are as follows:

2010/11

£62,206,000

2011/12

£49,201,000

2012/13

£49,525,000

2013/14

£49,701,000

2014/15

£50,858,000

2015/16

£52,721,000

2016/17

£52,755,000

2017/18*

£51,231,000

* Please note this may not be the final figure for year 2017/18 as operators claims are still currently being processed.
