Road works undertaken Junction 18 to Junction 2, M8 2015-17; EIR release

Information request and response under the Environmental Information (Scotland) Regulations 2004.


Information requested

 

“I was just wondering if it would be possible to obtain all the road works undertaken from the year 2015 – 2017 along the M8”

To which we clarified with you that the location of the road works were from Junction 18 to Junction 2 and the information was in relation to road works and not traffic management information.

Response

 

During the period between January 2015 and December 2017, the M8 M73 M74 Motorway Improvements Project was in construction phase which included road works on the M8 including the following:

M8 Fort J10 to M8 Newhouse J6

(i)    construction of approximately 10 km of new dual 2, 3 and 4 lane motorway with hardshoulders of which approximately 5 km was constructed offline (between Eurocentral J7 and Baillieston J8) and approximately 5 km was constructed online upgrading that section of the existing A8 trunk road (between Newhouse J6 and Eurocentral J7);

(ii)    construction of approximately 10 km of dual two-lane all purpose road incorporating approximately 5 km of the existing A8 trunk road; new sections between Bargeddie A89 to Bargeddie Junction (Showcase) and Carnbroe to Newhouse J6 both directions; 

(iii)    construction of 3 new grade separated motorway junctions, at:

Shawhead, Eurocentral and Chapelhall, and amendment of two existing motorway junctions, at Baillieston and Newhouse;

(iv)    construction and improvements of 27 structures, including two new major railway bridges, amendment of other railway bridges, a major motorway crossing of the North Calder Water, accommodation bridges and a badger underpass;

(v)    demolition and replacement of existing motorway and trunk road bridge structures;

(vi)    construction of approximately 16 km of pedestrian/cycle path;

(vii)    new access roads and side roads and realignment of existing side roads

(viii)    construction of widened motorway carriageway, principally by an additional lane, over existing motorway carriageway:

M8 eastbound carriageway from Junction 10, Springhill to Junction 8, Baillieston Interchange;

(ix)    significant interface with major Utilities' diversion works; including major gas pipe diversions at Shawhead, Baillieston and several other water and telecommunications diversions;

(x)     new carriageway drainage incorporating sustainable urban drainage systems (SUDS) facilities;

(xi)    significant environmental mitigation and enhancement works as described in the Environmental Assessment Documents;

(xii)    earthworks and ground improvement works, including mining stabilisation grouting works;

(xiii)    an Intelligent Transport System (ITS) across the Project network, including communications infrastructure, electrical work and variable message signs.

Please note that we have given you information for all routes which are the responsibility for Scotland Transerv and Amey as the information is unable to be split by route.
