Information regarding pedestrians killed or injured by moving vehicles: FOI release

Information request and response under the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002.

FOI reference: FOI/18/02924
Date received: 13 October 2018
Date responded: 6 November 2018

Information requested

  1. How many pedestrians were killed by a moving vehicle in a 20mph speed zone in Scotland in 2017?
  2. How many pedestrians were seriously injured by moving vehicle in a 20mph speed zone in Scotland in 2017?
  3. How many pedestrians were killed by moving vehicles in a 30mph speed zone in 2017?
  4. How many pedestrians were seriously injured by a moving vehicle in a 30mph speed zone in 2017?

If possible, could you also please answer how many cyclists were killed or seriously injured in Scotland in 20mph speed zones and 30mph speed zones in 2017.

These questions are just to get an idea of the incidents involving the public that occur in 20 and 30 miles per hour speed zones and to compare the two to see the difference, if there is a major contrast.

Response

Information about injury road accidents can be found in our publication Reported Road Casualties Scotland here

Table 33 in that publication provides a 5 year average for the information you requested. However, I attach a similar table showing the information for 2017.

I would note that, whilst we do know the speed limit for the section of road where the accidents took place, we do not hold any data on the actual speeds travelled by the vehicles at the time of the accidents.
