Information request and response under the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002.
Date received: 25 September 2018
Date responded: 12 October 2018
You asked for “the latest figures in Scotland for the following:
a) The total number of children and young people currently on the Child Protection register?
b) The total number of children and young people that are currently 'looked after', i.e. have some sort of support or intervention with social work services?”
Some of the information you have requested is available from the Children’s Social Work Statistics 2016 -17 which can be found at: https://www.gov.scot/stats/bulletins/01308. The publication details the number of children and young people looked after and on the child protection register at 31 July 2017. The statistics capture the number of children at the 31st July 2017 which means the statistics are not reflective of the number of children and young people being looked after or on the child protection register at this current moment in time.
As you may be aware there is no centralized child protection register in Scotland and each local authorities hold their own child protection register and record of the number of looked after children in their locality. You may wish to contact the relevant local authorities to obtain the most up to date information. The contact details for the relevant local authority can be found online at http://www.careinfoscotland.scot/find-my-council/.
