FOI reference: FOI/18/01023
Date received: 30 March 2018
Date responded: 16 April 2018
Information requested
You asked for information concerning offences under sections 1, 2B, 3A and 3ZB of the Road Traffic Act 1988.
Response
I enclose a copy of all of the information you requested in the attached excel workbook.
Information on specific offences is available through the statistics collected centrally on crimes and offences recorded by the police and on those proceeded against in court. The statistics dealing with recorded crime and court proceedings are however not directly comparable for a number of reasons. Recorded crime statistics count crimes and offences at the time that they came to the attention of Police Scotland while criminal proceedings statistics report on cases which have concluded in court. This means that a crime may be recorded by the police in one year and court proceedings concluded in a subsequent year. In addition, a person may be proceeded against for more than one crime involving more than one victim and there is the possibility that the crime recorded by the police may be altered in the course of judicial proceedings.
