Key Points

  • In 2022, 35.3 TWh of renewable electricity were generated in Scotland. This is a 28.1% increase compared to 2021 and a 9.8% change since 2020. This is the highest yearly figure to date, overtaking 2020.

 

  • The amount of renewable electricity generated in Scotland in 2022 is the equivalent of powering all households in Scotland for around three and half years.

 

  • Renewable electricity generation between October and December 2022 was up by 14.0% on Q4 2021. This is the most renewable electricity generated in the final quarter of a year in Scotland.

 

  • Renewable electricity capacity in Scotland has grown from 13.6 GW in September 2022 to 13.8 GW in December 2022.

 

  • Scotland’s net exports of electricity (exports minus imports) in 2022 were 18.7 TWh, a 17% increase compared to 2021.

 

  • The value of Scotland’s electricity exports had an estimated wholesale market value of £4.0 billion, which is a 63% increase on the estimated wholesale market value of electricity exports in 2021. This will be mainly due to large increases in the average price of electricity in 2022.

 

  • As in previous years, in 2022, the majority of Scotland’s renewable electricity generation came from wind (27.5 TWh). In 2022, 5.8 TWh were generated via offshore wind, and 21.8 TWh were generated by onshore wind.
