Food and other essentials

Now that shielding has paused, you can choose to visit shops yourself. This includes pharmacies, garden centres and indoor markets. You will need to wear a face covering unless you are exempt.

If you buy online, or have someone who’s able to get the items you need, you can carry on getting things in this way. Some retailers are also offering gift card schemes to allow others to shop for you.

The weekly grocery boxes have now stopped. Priority access to online supermarket delivery slots is still available to those who had signed up before 31 July. We are considering what support should be made available if our advice for shielding changes in the future.

Your local authority can offer support if you cannot afford food. You can contact them via the free national helpline on 0800 111 4000.

You can also still arrange for your prescription to be delivered. This can be by someone you know or by someone from your pharmacy. Contact your hospital care team if you need to have your medicines or equipment delivered.
