Weddings in Scotland: summary of what you can and cannot do

  • wedding receptions are not allowed in Level 4 areas
  • maximum numbers apply as long as the venue can meet physical distancing rules - if not, the number allowed to attend may be less in some venues
  • there are different rules on numbers for wedding ceremonies inside your private home
  • there are different rules for receptions at certain other venues such as self-catering accommodation
  • if you are planning to travel to attend a wedding ceremony or reception you should check the travel and accommodation rules for where you live as well as the place you are travelling to
  • the couple do not have to wear face coverings during the ceremony as long as they stay apart from other people or use a screen
  • all guests should follow physical distancing rules and must wear face coverings (apart from sitting down to eat and drink at a reception)
  • indoors, the couple and their parents (provided they are in the same household) are allowed to take part in a first dance, but no other dancing is allowed indoors
  • outdoors, groups of up to 15 people can sit or stand together, or mingle and dance with each other at the reception without physically distancing, but should remain 1 metre from those in other groups
  • low-level background music is allowed at receptions while people are eating and talking
  • live entertainment is also allowed at receptions when guests are watching and listening (guests should remain seated)
  • alcohol can be served at receptions in line with hospitality rules
  • speeches should be made outdoors if possible
  • do not attend a wedding if you have symptoms of COVID-19 or are self-isolating
