This section of the guidance provides a usable guide for retailers to follow to ensure that they have made minimum provisions for the health and safety of their staff. UK Government has published guidance that can be referred to. We have provided a checklist for retailers as an annex to this guidance. This has been informed by UK Government guidance: Working Safely During Coronavirus
The actions in the checklist should be fully considered and implemented where possible as part of procedures and should be considered by store managers, health and safety officers, small business owners and sole traders.
We have published guidance for public spaces and green spaces which retailer and local authorities should refer to regarding the public realm. It is a comprehensive guide with diagrams that will assist in the management of queues, parking, street layouts and other related issues.
Food Standard Scotland Guidance has designed guidance to supplement generic guidance for consumers and food businesses which has been published by Food Standards Scotland. It translates Scottish Government guidance on ‘Coronavirus (COVID-19): business and physical distancing guidance’ and the advice published by Health Protection Scotland for Non-Healthcare settings for application in food settings. This guidance also takes account of guidelines produced by the food industry on practical ways to provide a safe working environment at this time. FSS has also produced Guidance for the businesses take-away sector which should be referred to.
Whilst the majority of customers take due care and attention whilst shopping at this difficult time. Unfortunately there has been some instances of employees with customers not following store guidance. The Scottish Government wishes to enforce the message that customers have a strong role to play in ensuring shops and stores are able to serve the public whilst also protecting their employees. We have also therefore published customer guidance.
