Items and actions

The second meeting of the Qualifications Contingency Group met on 27 March to discuss the development of plans to enable the awarding of qualifications this summer following the cancellation of the exam diet.

Key points discussed:

  • latest position with virus suppression strategy
  • work underway to assess what is possible (logistically safe and secure) in relation to the assessment of National 5 coursework which has already been submitted by learners, and collected by the SQA
  • the information held by SQA - information on the variation of outturn between the estimates and the results, by subject and by centre – and how this could inform a moderation process
  • the critical importance of teacher judgement and issues being raised by practitioners in relation to estimating grades
  • further communications are planned before the Easter break
  • SQA is actively investigating the degree to which the system has remote access to SEEMIS
  • the existing Post-results service, which comprises reviewing exam scripts, requires re-designing to reflect the alternative certification model. As with the current model, it will need to involve the school
  • SQA and Colleges Scotland have produced a joint statement in relation to HN/VQ qualifications
  • Richard Lochhead is leading a group including agencies and unions to provide a high level response for the further and higher education sectors
  • cross-border conversations are ongoing with other regulators and awarding bodies to consider consistency of approach where appropriate
