What other countries are doing
In 2023, England and Wales changed the youngest age that someone can get married to 18 years old.
England and Wales also made new laws to stop anyone from setting up marriages for children.
These new laws were made to protect children who might be encouraged to marry early by their community.
This happens in different types of marriage which are not covered by normal marriage laws.
Northern Ireland is planning to move the youngest age for marriage to 18 years old.
