What the law says at the moment

At the moment you can get married in Scotland if you are 16 years old or older.

But there might be problems with this law.

Some young people may not fully understand what they are agreeing to.

They may be harmed or treated badly by others because they are young.

Young people who marry young may leave school earlier than if they had not married.

This means they may miss out on more learning for their career.

They may be hurt or treated badly at home – this is called domestic abuse.
