The below comments are direct quotes from respondents who were content to have their responses published:

  • Entry requirements for accessing TQFE at Level 11 appear to be appropriate. However, it would be helpful to clarify whether there are any specific differences for candidates with a standard degree (Level 9) versus an honours degree (Level10) when accepted on to a Level 11 TQFE course.
  • The use of the phrase competent in the use of Digital Technology in the entry requirements represents a subtle change in entry requirements. Whilst the rapid advancement of digital technology, including artificial intelligence, is unprecedented we appreciate the flexibility this change allows in assessing knowledge, understanding and skills.
  • Accessing the TQFE at Scottish Credit Qualifications Framework (SCQF) Level 11, for those with honours degrees gained at Level 10, corresponds to standard progression within the Scottish Education system. However, we do seek clarification regarding the transition from an ordinary degree at SCQF Level 9 to pursuing TQFE at SCQF Level 11, as there is no option for studying TQFE at SCQF Level 10. TQFE appears to diverge from the conventional sequential progression observed in most educational qualifications.
  • The entry requirement of an HND or HNC has become problematic in a number of areas. The further education sector works closely with industry to ascertain their requirements in terms of qualifications of future employees. In many areas (especially the traditional trades) the HND or HNC is not recognised by industry as fit for purpose, therefore enrolments have declined resulting in these courses not available for staff to undertake or indeed hold on appointment as a lecturer. This is only going to become a bigger concern as time goes on.
  • The TQFE guidance document as detailed in this consultation is suitable for lecturers at this time. The proposals provide flexibility in relation to entry requirements and recognition of prior learning. This is particularly important for those lecturers completing the TQFE award at SCQF level 9, where core qualifications at HNC or City Guilds can be supplemented by a PDA at SCQF level 9 to prepare lecturers for study at SCQF level 9.
  • We are of the view that the requirements set out in the draft guidance represent a positive starting point for taking forward a new process for accrediting and determining the entry requirements for programmes of TQFE but we believe that they should be an interim measure until such time as we are able to develop a fully informed alternative approach based on the Professional Standards.
  • EIS-FELA broadly welcomes the approach adopted in the guidance document in relation to entry requirements and believes that the proposals go some way to addressing the current barriers which some lecturers experience in seeking access to TQFE.
