Children and young people mental health services: school counselling and community support

Analysis of information provided by local councils on school counselling services and community mental health support in their area from July 2023 to March 2025.

Overview

We fund local authorities to provide access to counselling services in secondary schools, and community-based mental health supports for children, young people and their families. These are focused on prevention and early intervention, and are part of a whole-system approach to supporting children and young people’s mental health and wellbeing.

To streamline our approach to reporting, we have moved to annual reports from 2024-2025 onwards. Please note that this makes direct comparison with the previous six-month and nine-month reporting periods challenging.

The diverse nature of the services involved in meeting the needs of different communities means that they record data in various ways. This results in there being some inconsistencies, with subtotals and totals not precisely matching.
