Cereal and oilseed rape harvest - first estimates: 2025

Initial estimates of area, yield and production for winter and spring barley, wheat, oats and oilseed rape, for the 2025 harvest.

Key findings

  • Industry experts predict a good year for the Scottish cereal and oilseed rape harvest. Total cereal production for 2025 could reach a high over 3.2 million tonnes, well above the average over the past five years.
  • Final results, based on a larger sample of farms, will be published after harvest completes in December.
  • Favourable weather conditions in autumn 2024 supported winter crops, which are predicted to perform well. The outlook is less positive for spring crops, where the effects of drought, following the sunniest spring and hottest summer on record, will be most pronounced.
  • A good year is predicted for winter barley and oilseed rape, with very high yields expected, despite a decrease in area of planted oilseed rape.
  • Strong yield results and increased planted area are expected to drive a large increase in total wheat production in 2025, compared to the previous year.
  • Spring barley production is expected to come in at around the five-year average, despite the challenging dry growing conditions.
  • Oats production is anticipated to increase. Despite a particularly early harvest for many this year, the harvest continues in Scotland and limited data at this point makes oats predictions less reliable.
