Record high yields more than offset decrease in sown area

Total cereal production increased by 10% to 3.1 million tonnes in 2022, compared to 2.9 million tonnes in 2021. This makes 2022 a very good harvest year, with the highest level of production since 2014.

Dry and hot weather conditions in spring and summer resulted in an early harvest. Dry conditions around harvest reduced the need for drying.

A total cereal yield of 7.6 tonnes per hectare is the highest record of the last 20 years. Winter barley, wheat and oilseed rape yields are their highest in the past two decades.

High yields compensated for the 4% decrease in the total cereal area compared to 2021. This reduction was largely driven by a fall in spring barley and oats sown areas.
