Building standards - Futures Board Programme: workstream information

A programme to support sustainable improvements to the building standards system and increase the level of compliance with building regulations.


The Building Standards Futures Board was set up in May 2019 to provide guidance and direction on implementing the recommendations made by the review panels on compliance and enforcement and fire safety. These review panels were formed by the Ministerial Working Group on Building and Fire Safety, following the failings in the construction of Edinburgh school buildings and the fire at Grenfell Tower, London.

The board provides strategic advice and oversight for a broad programme of work aimed at strengthening the building standards service in Scotland. This includes improving performance, enhancing expertise and supporting the long-term sustainability of the building standards service.  

Output

The board originally established seven workstreams to take forward its recommendations:

  • verification delivery model
  • compliance plan approach
  • digital transformation
  • certification strategy
  • workforce strategy
  • technical strategy
  • verification standards

Due to significant progress across these areas, from 2024 the programme’s delivery and focus has centred on four key workstreams:
