Recruitment

In Wave 80, businesses not permanently stopped trading were asked if they had experienced any difficulties recruiting employees in March 2023.

Figure 1: Difficulties in recruiting employees had been experienced by an estimated 43.1% of applicable businesses. The highest rates of recruitment difficulties were reported by businesses in the Construction (52.4%) and Accommodation & Food Services (47.0%) industry sectors.

Of those businesses having had recruitment difficulties, 62.9% reported having a low number of applications for the roles on offer, and a similar proportion reported a lack of qualified applicants for the roles on offer (60.7%). An estimated 17.3% of businesses having had recruitment difficulties reported that this was due to a reduced number of EU applicants, with this share rising to 31.5% in the Accommodation and Food Services industry sector.
