Two Child Limit Payment

We will launch the Two Child Limit Payment on 2 March 2026, to support low-income families in Scotland impacted by the UK Government’s two-child limit policy in Universal Credit.

The two-child limit prevents parents or carers from receiving the Universal Credit child element for more than 2 children, with a few exceptions. We announced plans in December 2024 to offset the UK-wide two-child limit policy in Scotland as part of our work to tackle child poverty.

What is the Two Child Limit Payment

The Two Child Limit Payment will be:

  • a monthly payment matching the Universal Credit child element: currently £292.81 per eligible child
  • available to households in Scotland who qualify for Universal Credit but do not receive the child element for one or more children due to the two-child limit

How to apply

  • applications open on 2 March 2026 – we will update this page with more details ahead of launch
  • apply through Social Security Scotland: online, by phone, or in person.
  • local client advisers are available across Scotland to assist with applications, including home visits if needed

Social Security Scotland will manage and deliver the payment.
