Christina McKelvie MSP, Minister for Drugs and Alcohol Policy, sadly died on 27 March, 2025.  A Motion of Condolence was led by the FM in the Scottish Parliament on Wednesday, April 2.  

Responsibilities

Supports the Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care.

Specific responsibilities are:

  • alcohol harm prevention, harm reduction and recovery
  • alcohol treatment
  • reducing drinking at hazardous and harmful levels
  • reducing drug related deaths
  • supporting the rehabilitation and recovery of those living with drug or alcohol dependency
  • tackling and reducing the harm of problem substance use

 

Biography

Born in Glasgow, Christina went to St Leonard's Secondary School and her studies included the University of St Andrews.

Christina was MSP for Hamilton, Larkhall and Stonehouse since May 2011 and had two sons. She was previously MSP for Central Scotland and chair of the Equalities and Human Rights Committee. She was appointed Minister for Culture, Europe and International Development in March 2023, and Minister for Drugs and Alcohol Policy in February 2024.
