The Northern Isles are a stronghold for the black guillemot. Over 400 of them breed within this pMPA every year, raising their young in crevices and burrows along the shores of Papa Westray and the Holm of Papa Westray.
The boundary of the MPA represents a 2km marine extension around the North Hill and Holm of Papa Westray terrestrial Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), designated for breeding black guillemots.
The current conservation objective is to conserve the protected features of this MPA.
