Please Note

The Practioner packs remain valid, however the Supreme Court judgment on certain aspects of the service has meant that some of the information contained will need to be revised.  In short, references to the law coming into effect on 31 August are no longer applicable.  However, Ministers remain committed to the policy and are currently considering how best to move forward in the light of the Supreme Court judgment

Practitioners Information Pack to support communication with the public

The ‘Getting It Right for Every Child’ (or GIRFEC) approach aims to improve the lives of children and young people it will:

  • set out how people working with children, young people and parents should understand and consider a child’s or young person’s wellbeing;
  • ensure a Named Person is available as a central point of contact for children, young people and parents, to provide advice, information, and support, and help to access other services if and when needed; and
  • put in place a single planning framework – called the Child’s Plan – to ensure a consistent approach to how a range of extra support that is not generally available should be planned, delivered and coordinated around an individual child’s needs and circumstances.

This information pack is designed to support you as a practitioner in your conversations with members of the public who may have questions or want to know more about how GIRFEC will affect them and their families.
