Community engagement is about working with people in local areas, so that they feel involved in the decisions that affect them.
Work to strengthen and enhance community engagement includes:
- establishing single police and fire & rescue services which will strengthen links with communities, with a designated senior officer for each area, and provide the opportunity for more councillors to have their say on policing in their area
- policing plans for every council ward area tailored to local needs and priorities
- the CashBack for Communities programme
- setting up the Ready Scotland website to ensure that people are able to cope with potential disasters such as fire, flood or severe weather, and with everyday challenges and risks faced by people in need
Police Scotland and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) formally went live in April 2013.
The police have a duty to uphold and enforce the law and maintain the peace in Scotland. The roles of the SFRS are underpinned by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Framework for Scotland 2013 which provides priorities and objectives, with guidance and support on the carrying out of its functions.
Partnership and community engagement are at the heart of the work of both services.

Bills and legislation
The Police and Fire Reform (Scotland) Act 2012 brought together the eight former police forces, the Scottish Police Services Authority and the Scottish Crime and Drug Enforcement Agency into a single Police Service of Scotland from April 1, 2013.
