Reservoir Safety Research

Dam Failure Probability Research Project

Section 22 of the Reservoirs (Scotland) Act 2011 (“the Act”) outlines the matters which the Scottish Environment Protection Agency must take into account when giving a risk designation to a reservoir. There is currently no mechanism for calculating the risk of dam failure which is accepted by the reservoirs industry.

The Scottish Government has  awarded a research contract to AECOM to identify factors affecting the probability of dam failure leading to an uncontrolled release of water from a reservoir.  A simple matrix will be developed to derive the probability, for inclusion in the risk designation of reservoirs required under Section 22 of the Act.

The research outputs are expected to be made available in the Spring of 2016.
