ISBN: 9781786528605

Provides Scotland totals for the annual December survey, based on data from larger agricultural holdings together with estimates for smaller farms.

Executive Summary

The areas planted in December 2016 increased compared to the previous year, with oilseed rape up eight per cent and wheat up two per cent. The area planted as oats was the largest in the last ten years.

Overall production of hay and silage decreased in 2016, due to a drop in the yields.

The number of sheep, pigs and poultry rose for the second successive year, while the decrease in cattle reversed the upward trend seen in the previous two years, with numbers now at their lowest since the 1950s.
