Summary

Stage 1 - Caution and Charge to Report

65,395 police reports were submitted to COPFS in July - September 2011 compared with 62,944 in July - September 2010, a increase of around 4%.

A decrease in the number of police direct measures issued in July - September 2011 (14,930) compared with 15,817 issued July - September 2010, a decrease of about 6%.

Business distribution - Of all cases dealt with by the police from October 2010 to September 2011, approximately 18% were dealt with by way of a police direct measure.

Stage 2 - Case Marking

30,924 cases were marked for a Fiscal direct measure in the period July - September 2011 , compared with 29,850 cases in the same quarter the previous year, an increase of approximately 4%.

Business distribution - Of all cases given first markings by the Procurator Fiscal in July - September 2011, 41% were marked for a Fiscal direct measure, 15% for prosecution in the JP courts or by stipendiary magistrates, and 27% for prosecution in the Sheriff summary courts.

Stage 3 - Court

The percentage of accused pleading guilty at first calling was 33% in July - September 2011, compared to 34% in the same quarter of the previous year.

Stage 4 - Disposal

53% of all sentences imposed by the summary courts between July and September 2011 were fines, while 13% were custodial.
