Lord Bracadale's Biography
The Right Hon Lord Bracadale (Alastair P. Campbell)
Lord Bracadale served as a Judge of the Court of Session and High Court in Scotland between 2003 and 2017, when he retired. Between 2003 and 2013 he sat on first instance civil and criminal business and from 2013 on appellate business.
He is a graduate of the University of Aberdeen (M.A.) and University of Strathclyde (LL.B). Between 1985 and 2003 he practised as an advocate, becoming a QC in 1995. During 1997-1999 he served as senior prosecuting counsel in Scotland. He was senior Crown Counsel at the Scottish Court in the Netherlands between 1999 and 2001.
Between 2008 and 2011 he was the judicial member of the Parole Board for Scotland. He has acted as an administrative judge for both first instance and appellate criminal business. Since 2015 he has been a member of the Steering Group of a joint project between the Royal Society and the Royal Society of Scotland to develop scientific judicial primers for the judiciary. In 2016 he was appointed as a Surveillance Commissioner and subsequently, in 2017, a Judicial Commissioner (part time) under the Investigatory Powers Act.
